The Lagoon of Seven Colors

Bacalar Lagoon in southern Quintana Roo is one of Mexico's most breathtaking natural wonders. The freshwater lake displays seven distinct shades of blue and turquoise, created by varying depths and a white limestone bottom that catches the sun. It's like the Caribbean, but calmer, fresher, and without the saltwater sting - perfect for families. Tía Rosa came down from Mexico City to visit us at Bacalar last spring and just sat on the dock for two hours saying "no manches, no manches" over and over. That is the correct response to Bacalar.

On the Water

The best way to experience Bacalar is from the water. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the crystal-clear lagoon. Boat tours visit the Canal de los Piratas (Pirates' Channel), cenotes connected to the lagoon, and the stromatolites - ancient living rock formations made by cyanobacteria, some of the oldest life forms on Earth. Kids are fascinated by the science once you tell them they're looking at 3.5-billion-year-old technology. Mateo asked me about stromatolites for weeks.

Pack polarized sunglasses to see through the incredibly clear water to the bottom. And go OUT of your way not to step on the stromatolite mats - they're protected, fragile, and the boat captains will (rightly) yell at you in Spanish if you do.

Cenotes

Several cenotes are accessible from the lagoon, including Cenote Azul - a massive open cenote with a restaurant and jumping platforms at various heights. The brave kids love the cliff jumping while smaller ones splash in the shallow edges. Bring biodegradable sunscreen - chemical sunscreens damage the delicate cenote ecosystems and most cenote attendants here will check before you get in. Reef-safe only, cariño. They are not playing.

Pueblo de Bacalar, una calle, dos taquerías, una panadería. Eso es todo. Eso es suficiente.

The Town

Bacalar town is small, charming, and refreshingly uncommercial. The central plaza has a Spanish fort (Fuerte de San Felipe, built in 1729 to defend against Caribbean pirates) with a small museum that kids enjoy. Restaurants along the lagoon waterfront serve fresh ceviche and Mexican classics with million-dollar views. Qué rico - the marisco platters at the lagoon-front restaurants are unreal.

Getting There

Bacalar is about 3.5 hours south of Cancún or 40 minutes from Chetumal (which has its own small airport). The drive from Tulum takes about 2.5 hours and passes through beautiful jungle scenery. Consider combining Bacalar with Tulum or Mahahual for the ultimate Quintana Roo family trip.

One warning if you fly into Cancún first: do NOT take the unmarked taxis circling outside arrivals. Use a pre-paid taxi from the official counter inside the terminal, ADO bus, or rent a car. Same rule, every time. The "free welcome shot" hawkers at the all-inclusive desks are part of the same scammy ecosystem - walk past, do not engage.

Where to Stay

Several boutique hotels and vacation rentals sit directly on the lagoon with private docks. Waking up to those colors every morning is worth the trip alone. Book lakefront - you don't want to be across the road from this water. If your kids are old enough, bring a snorkel set - even though the lagoon is freshwater, you'll see fish and the stromatolites up close. A waterproof phone case lets you take photos worry-free. A dry bag is a lifesaver for keeping valuables safe on the boat. Bring a reusable water bottle for everyone - and refill from sealed bottled water at the hotel, never tap.

Lake Day Essentials

What I keep packed for Bacalar specifically:

Close-up of tasty tacos topped with salsa verde, perfect for Mexican food lovers.
Cinco tacos por veinte pesos. Sophie ate three. Sophie is four. Híjole.

Two nights minimum at Bacalar. Three is better. Your kids will paddle through seven shades of blue and remember it for the rest of their lives. Ándale.
