Bacalar Lagoon: Mexico's Maldives for Families
Seven shades of blue, cenotes, and zero crowds - why Bacalar is the most beautiful lake destination in Mexico.

The Lagoon of Seven Colors
Bacalar Lagoon in southern Quintana Roo is one of Mexico's most breathtaking natural wonders. The freshwater lake displays seven distinct shades of blue and turquoise, created by varying depths and limestone bottom. It's like the Caribbean Sea, but calmer, fresher, and without the saltwater sting - perfect for families.
On the Water
The best way to experience Bacalar is from the water. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the crystal-clear lagoon. Boat tours visit the Canal de los Piratas (Pirates' Channel), cenotes connected to the lagoon, and the stromatolites - ancient living rock formations that are some of the oldest life forms on Earth. Kids are fascinated by the science behind these structures.
Pack polarized sunglasses to see through the incredibly clear water to the bottom.
Cenotes
Several cenotes are accessible from the lagoon, including Cenote Azul - a massive open cenote with a restaurant and jumping platforms at various heights. The brave kids love the cliff jumping while smaller ones splash in the shallow edges. Bring biodegradable sunscreen as chemical sunscreens damage the delicate cenote ecosystems.
The Town
Bacalar town is small, charming, and refreshingly uncommercial. The central plaza has a Spanish fort (Fuerte de San Felipe) with a small museum that kids enjoy. Restaurants along the lagoon waterfront serve fresh ceviche and Mexican classics with million-dollar views.
Getting There
Bacalar is about 3.5 hours south of Cancun or 40 minutes from Chetumal (which has its own small airport). The drive from Tulum takes about 2.5 hours and passes through beautiful jungle scenery. Consider combining Bacalar with Tulum for the ultimate Quintana Roo family trip.
Where to Stay
Several boutique hotels and vacation rentals sit directly on the lagoon with private docks. Waking up to those colors every morning is worth the trip alone. Book lakefront - you don't want to be across the road from this water. If your kids are old enough, bring a snorkel set - the marine life here is incredible. A waterproof phone case lets you take photos worry-free. A dry bag is a lifesaver for keeping valuables safe at the beach. Bring a reusable water bottle for everyone - staying hydrated makes a huge difference with kids.
